Women’s health startup Health In Her Hue has announced a $3 million seed funding round, led by venture capital firm Seae Ventures. The company, founded in 2018 by CEO Ashlee Wisdom, aims to improve healthcare outcomes for women of color by connecting them with culturally competent providers and educational resources tailored to their needs. This funding comes at a critical moment, as women of color continue to face barriers to quality care rooted in discrimination.

An important aspect of Health In Her Hue’s mission is to address disparities in healthcare and rebuild trust between women of color and the healthcare system. Many myths and biases persist in modern medicine, such as the belief that Black people feel less pain compared to white patients or that Black skin is thicker than white skin. By providing access to providers who understand and respect the unique experiences and needs of women of color, Health In Her Hue aims to improve healthcare outcomes and eliminate these barriers.

The funding will enable Health In Her Hue to expand its platform and programs. This includes growing its Care Squad service, which offers customized health education classes, and adding new topic areas like fertility, endometriosis, and postpartum care. The company also plans to launch a video question-and-answer product, allowing users to get expert advice on their health questions.

Fundraising for Health In Her Hue was challenging, particularly during the economic downturn in 2022. However, CEO Ashlee Wisdom remained focused on both securing funding and generating revenue sustainably. The company has received support from Seae Ventures since its 2021 pre-seed round, and additional investors in this oversubscribed seed round include Johnson & Johnson Impact Ventures, HBCU Founders Fund, Stanford Impact Fund, and Morgan Stanley Inclusive Ventures Labs. To date, Health In Her Hue has raised a total of $4.2 million.

Going forward, Health In Her Hue aims to expand its reach and improve customer retention by enhancing the member experience. The company wants to ensure that more women of color and individuals can benefit from its valuable offerings. The funding will be instrumental in achieving these goals and furthering the mission of Health In Her Hue to improve healthcare outcomes for women of color.
