Apheros in Zurich raises €165M to cool data centers

Article Summary

TLDR:

  • Data centers consume a large amount of energy for cooling, and Apheros has secured €1.65 million in funding to develop metal foam-based cooling solutions.
  • Their patented manufacturing process creates foam structures with exceptional heat transfer properties, which can help reduce energy consumption and cooling costs.

Data centres are the backbone of the digital age, with an unprecedented surge in demand for digital infrastructure. However, the energy consumption of these data centres is skyrocketing, and by 2030, an estimated six percent of global energy consumption will be used specifically for cooling them. Apheros, a Swiss deep tech startup, has recently secured a €1.65 million pre-seed funding round led by Founderful to accelerate the development and deployment of their revolutionary metal foam-based cooling solutions.

Apheros’ patented manufacturing process creates foam structures with completely open porosity and unparalleled surface area, surpassing traditional solutions by a factor of a thousand. This translates into exceptional heat transfer and flow properties, making it ideal for high-performance cooling applications. The metal foams can be easily integrated within customers’ existing cooling systems to address the urgent needs of reduced energy consumption and cooling costs.

Founded in August 2023 as an ETH Zurich spin-off, Apheros AG was developed to tackle cooling challenges in various applications, including high-performance computing and mobile devices. The startup is led by a team with a proven track record in innovation, business development, and tech transfer. Julia Carpenter, co-founder and CEO of Apheros, was recently recognized as one of MIT’s Reviews “Innovators under 35” for her invention of Apheros’ novel metal foam manufacturing process. Co-founder and CTO Gaëlle Andreatta has over 16 years of experience in R&D, Tech Transfer, and start-up development.

According to Julia Carpenter, Apheros’ technology has the potential to set new industry standards and significantly reduce the environmental impact of cooling solutions worldwide. The funding will allow the company to advance its mission of helping customers achieve superior thermal performance, increase energy efficiency, and contribute to a greener future by expanding production, increasing research and development efforts, and bringing state-of-the-art solutions to a broader market.

Apheros aims to catalyze the transition to a more sustainable future through materials innovation and establish its products as the gold standard for sustainable, high-performance liquid cooling. With the support of Founderful, the company is on a mission to revolutionize cooling technology and set new industry standards by introducing more efficient cooling solutions to the market.
