TLDR
- India’s top startup cities Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai are not among the world’s top 30 startup cities according to a report by PitchBook.
- Paris, Sao Paulo, Toronto, Berlin, Hong Kong, Denver, Guangzhou, Tokyo, and others ranked ahead of Indian cities in terms of startup ecosystems.
India, with the third largest startup ecosystem globally, has seen its top startup cities fall short in the rankings. According to a report by PitchBook, Mumbai is at 32nd, Bengaluru at 34th, and Gurugram at 48th among the world’s top startup cities. The rankings compare locations based on “overall development and growth rates” relative to each other, assessing the size, maturity, and growth rates of the VC ecosystem. The top cities on the list included San Francisco, New York, Beijing, Shanghai, and others. In contrast, other reports such as by Startup Genome and StartupBlink had ranked Indian cities higher based on funding, talent, and experience in the startup ecosystem.
