Top 10 Biggest Private Equity Giants in the Global Market

TLDR:

  • In 2023, private equity firms controlled $8.2 trillion in assets globally, marking a significant increase over the last five years.
  • Blackstone, KKR, and EQT were the top three private equity firms, each raising over $100 billion in capital.

In a recent report by Private Equity International (PEI), the top 50 private equity firms worldwide were ranked based on the scale of capital raised over a five-year period ending March 31, 2023. Private equity firms included in the ranking were those that raise capital with the purpose of directly investing in businesses, covering diversified private equity, venture capital, growth equity, buyouts, and other investment strategies.

The majority of the top 50 private equity firms were based in North America, with 36 of the firms hailing from the region. Blackstone emerged as the top private equity firm globally, raising $125.6 billion in capital from 2018 to 2023. Other notable firms included KKR and EQT, both raising over $100 billion in the same period.

In contrast, Europe had nine firms in the top 50, with prominent asset managers like Hg and Permira Advisors based in London, England. Across Asia, Hillhouse Capital Group in Singapore emerged as the top alternative investment firm, but faced challenges amid regulatory crackdowns and slow stock market performance in China.
