Southwest Airlines Takes Flight with Eco-Friendly Fuel Investment Venture

TLDR:

  • Southwest Airlines launches Sustainable Aviation Fuel Venture Investment Business (SARV).
  • Invests $30 million in SAF technology startup LanzaJet.

Southwest Airlines has announced the establishment of Southwest Airlines Renewable Ventures (SARV), a subsidiary dedicated to managing the airline’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) investments to achieve its clean fuel goals. The company has invested $30 million in SAF technology startup LanzaJet, known for its “Alcohol-to-Jet” technology that creates SAF and renewable diesel from sustainable ethanol sources. This move aligns with Southwest’s updated sustainability strategy, “Nonstop to Net Zero,” which aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. SARV’s goal is to scale SAF through strategic investments, ensuring access to high-quality and affordable SAF for Southwest. LanzaJet plans to build an ethanol-to-SAF facility to produce SAF primarily for Southwest, incorporating technology licensed by SAFFiRE Renewables, a company previously invested in by Southwest. This investment is a proactive step towards securing affordable SAF and meeting Southwest’s sustainability goals.
