German startup secures €51M to combat methane emissions

TLDR:

  • Hamburg-based atmio secured €5.1M in seed funding to help natural gas companies tackle harmful methane leaks.
  • The funding will be used to go to market, develop the product, hire new engineers, and build out a marketing and customer success team.

Germany’s atmio, a company focused on reducing harmful methane leaks in the oil and gas sector, recently raised €5.1M in a seed funding round led by Notion Capital. Other investors included SquareOne, HCVC, and Robin Capital, as well as angel investment from industry experts. The company plans to use the funding to go to market and expand its product offerings.

Methane leaks are a significant contributor to global warming, and atmio’s platform aims to help natural gas operators comply with new EU regulations on methane emissions reduction. By digitizing manual processes and combining handheld and stationary monitors, a mobile app, and an integrated management platform, atmio offers end-to-end detection, repair, and logging of methane leaks, making it easier for operators to manage emissions.

Co-Founder and CEO Matthias Schmittmann emphasized the importance of targeting methane leaks to reduce harmful emissions. The company’s solution has already demonstrated significant impact in averting methane release equivalent to 160 return flights from Germany to the Maldives. With the seed funding, atmio plans to expand its market presence in Germany and across Europe, aiming to become a leader in measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions.

Notion Capital, the lead investor in the funding round, sees atmio’s platform as a timely solution to help European natural gas companies comply with new regulations. The investment will support atmio’s growth and development as it works towards reducing harmful emissions and capturing emitted methane for market use. The company’s vision is to integrate additional technologies, such as satellite and drone data, to become a comprehensive platform for industry-related emissions management.
