Maurten secures €20M funding for Swedish sports nutrition startup

TLDR:

  • Swedish sports nutrition startup Maurten secures a €20M investment from IRIS Ventures.
  • Maurten’s fuel ecosystem uses patented hydrogel technology to improve athletic performance.

Swedish sports nutrition startup Maurten has raised €20M in funding from venture capital firm IRIS Ventures. Maurten, based in Gothenburg, focuses on enhancing athletic performance through its fuel ecosystem that leverages patented hydrogel technology. The company was founded by Mårten Fryknäs, Olof Sköld, and Karl Sköld, who bring expertise in medical, biotech, and engineering fields. Maurten’s products, including drink mixes, gels, and bicarb systems, are made from food-grade ingredients without added flavors, colorants, or preservatives.

The hydrogel technology ensures rapid carbohydrate uptake, starting within 15-20 minutes and peaking at 30-45 minutes, with most absorption completed in 60-75 minutes. Maurten’s products have been endorsed by elite athletes such as Eliud Kipchoge, Hellen Obiri, and Keely Hodgkinson. The company also serves as a fueling partner for various competitions, including The IRONMAN Group Global Series and the Boston Marathon.

Recently, the Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) announced a partnership with Maurten for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. Maurten will provide Bermuda’s Olympic athletes with its hydrogel-based sports fuel to enhance their performance. IRIS Ventures, the venture capital firm that invested in Maurten, focuses on supporting innovative founders and brands that aim to improve lives through responsible innovation, diversity, and transparency. The firm helps founders grow their businesses by providing access to major markets in Europe, the UK, and the US, investing primarily in Series A and later-stage funding rounds.
