DC Roundup: JUUL Dominates VC Game; BetMGM App Launches

TLDR:

– DC saw a record-breaking $1.7 billion in VC funding in Q2 2024

– JUUL’s raise was the nation’s third largest, signaling a trend towards capital-efficient, high-growth companies

DC’s tech and entrepreneurship scene experienced a significant boost in the second quarter of 2024, with a record-breaking $1.7 billion in venture capital funding. This marks the greatest sum of funds for the region since the first quarter of 2022, according to the latest quarterly Venture Monitor report released by PitchBook and the National Venture Capital Association.

One of the standout deals contributing to this surge was JUUL’s raise, which was the nation’s third largest last quarter. Despite JUUL relocating to DC in 2020, the company still maintains a significant presence on the West Coast. However, experts caution that national trends still point to a potential slowdown in the VC landscape.

Alex Shtarkman, vice president at Revolution Ventures, highlighted the shift in focus towards capital-efficient, high-growth companies. VCs are now seeking out companies with bulletproof fundamentals or exponential growth potential, as time and capital resources become more limited in the competitive market.

Other notable developments in DC’s tech scene include Jonathon Shepeard’s fusion of music and technology in his platform Payments Plug, which simplifies the integration of banking and IT services for companies. Additionally, the city unveiled the “Office to Anything” program to incentivize building conversions for retail, hospitality, and other uses through a 15-year temporary property tax freeze.

BetMGM is set to launch its sports betting app in DC next week, following the DC Council’s decision to open the betting market to more companies. Meanwhile, the Federal Trade Commission raised concerns about manipulative design techniques used by platforms offering subscription services to push users to purchase products.

As the tech community in DC prepares to honor influential engineers in the region, there are also upcoming events including a tech industry breakout session hosted by Northeastern University and a pitch skills workshop by NEXT powered by Shulman Rogers. Climate DC will also host a meetup for sustainability and climate tech professionals in Shaw.
