Only 7% of US climate tech venture capital funding went to female founders in 2023, according to data from Pitchbook. This is a decrease from the previous year, when female founders raised $106 million compared to $80 million in 2023. The disparity in funding between male and female founders can be attributed to the fact that venture capital is dominated by men, with women making up only 11% of partners at VC firms. Historically, VCs have tended to fund startups with all-male management teams. However, research shows that female-founded companies actually generate twice as much revenue per dollar invested compared to male-founded companies. Despite the funding gap, there are some female-founded climate tech startups that have been successful, such as Kind Design and Amini. Overall, the article highlights the need for more gender equality in venture capital funding in order to support and promote female-founded climate tech companies.
