Carbon-Cleaning Company Teams Up with Saudi Arabia for Innovative Project

TLDR:

  • Spiritus Technologies signs deal with Saudi-backed Aramco Ventures to develop carbon-sucking silos in Wyoming.
  • The project, called Orchard One, aims to capture and sequester up to 2 million tons of carbon dioxide annually starting in 2026.

Spiritus Technologies, a venture capital firm focused on building a direct air carbon capture project in Wyoming, has partnered with Saudi-backed Aramco Ventures to develop its technology on a pilot project in the Middle East. The agreement includes exploring further collaboration on the potential piloting and large-scale deployment of Spiritus’ technology. The company plans to build a field of silos in Wyoming to draw carbon dioxide out of the air and store it underground. The Saudi government-backed Aramco Ventures has made an undisclosed equity investment in Spiritus Technologies, following a previous $11 million investment from various sources. The partnership aligns with Saudi Arabia’s goal of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The key element of Spiritus’ technology is its sorbent technology, which captures carbon dioxide using wind blowing through silos filled with carbon-capturing spheres. These silos, structured as trees, groves, and orchards, will cover several hundred acres of land in central Wyoming in a project called Orchard One. This project plans to earn money by selling carbon removal credits to companies looking to offset their carbon footprints. Spiritus Technologies aims to apply for permitting with the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality’s Industrial Siting Council soon and begin carbon removal in 2026. When completed, the project is expected to remove up to 2 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.
